The Pride Of Britain Awards

We hear a lot today about a Britain that is broken.
About a selfish nation riven with hate, greed and fear.
A Britain that is sliding into moral decay, with its citizens content to stand by and let community fall apart.

Anyone who believes that should have spent last night in London's Grosvenor House hotel, to witness a group of individuals whose dedication, love, and courage blow that theory out of the water.

And that reminds me why we need no apologies that we are proud to be British.

As ever, during the champagne reception and pre-ceremony dinner, eyes where all on the big stars - Cheryl Cole, Paul O'grady, Ant and Dec, Michael Macintyre.....
But as host Carol Vorderman began to tell the tales of devotion and bravery, the only people worth a second glance were the award winners.

Seated at 102 candle lit tables, the 850 strong audience was moved from tears to gales of laughter as the notion of what a star is was turned on its head, and we were left humbled.

Take the first hero, 10 year old Tom Phillips, who drove a tractor into a bull that was trampling his father, or the other end of the age spectrum, 91 year old Tom Lackey, who walks the wings of planes, and had raised over a million pound for charity.

It's people, and nights like this that remind us Britain is not broken. We just need the odd reminder that we are British. Be proud of it, and realize that, if anything, its for people like this we should be saving this world ......

It's heartwarming what these people do. Maybe, just maybe, we can do a little bit too.....
